Tressie McMillan Cottom and Mary Gray receive 2020 MacArthur Fellowships

BKC faculty associates Tressie McMillan Cottom and Mary Gray received 2020 MacArthur Fellowships for “extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits.” McMillan Cottom is a sociologist, writer, and public scholar, and Gray is an anthropologist and media scholar.

“My life’s creative challenge is wielding the tension between powerful narrative and compelling data to center Black intellectual lives as craft and method,” McMillan Cottom says.

“We animate and deploy technologies to express our social, cultural, political, and economic realities. Technologies cannot replace our humanness. They can only amplify and stifle what and who comes to matter,” Gray says.
