Embracing AI for the Social Good

The Imperative to Engage Globally

In 2017, the Berkman Klein Center and the MIT Media Lab launched the Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence Initiative. The overall aim of this Initiative is to bolster the use of AI for the public good through evidence-based research and capacity building.

We are excited to share some of our recent work on AI at the international level with a focus on global governance and inclusion. Our work on this track, in collaboration with partner institutions around the world, began with a global dialogue series with policymakers and stakeholders across many sectors and regions to get a better grasp on the challenges and opportunities of AI governance in their respective social and cultural contexts and from diverse perspectives.

During this listening tour, a number of key challenges to promoting AI for the social good emerged. We are excited to share here some of the key learnings as well as some of the approaches and tools that we have developed to begin addressing those challenges. By sharing some of our ongoing work and resources, we hope to highlight the importance of building a more inclusive AI ecosystem at a global level, and invite additional engagement and collaboration across stakeholders.
