June Okal is the Senior Manager, Global Stakeholder Engagement, East and Southern Africa for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). She is a qualified Technology, Media, and Telecommunications lawyer from Kenya and has extensive experience providing legal and policy support to global businesses across Sub-Saharan Africa, including at Meta (formerly Facebook), American Tower Corporation, and Google. Prior to joining ICANN, June was a member of the Berkman Klein Center's Institute for Rebooting Social Media (RSM) at Harvard University, where she served as an Employee Fellow. In this role, she spearheaded a project that focused on studying how intermediary liability is perceived as a legal, technical, and social construct. Her research specifically examined different social networks and mapped legal and regulatory frameworks across 50 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Over several years as a Fellow at ARTICLE 19, the Internet Governance Lab, Kenya ICT Action Network, and the Collaboration on International ICT Policy in East and Southern Africa (CIPESA), June conducted extensive research on a wide range of topics. Her work encompasses Regulatory Sandboxes, Intermediary Liability, Domain Name System (DNS) Abuse, Freedom of Expression and Content Moderation, Disinformation, Human Centered FinTech, and Data Protection. June's expertise and significant contributions have earned her well-deserved recognition. She has been listed among Africa's Top 50 Individuals Leading in Legal Innovation and Africa's Leading Women in Legal Innovation. June is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a Patent and Trademark Agent. She holds a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree in Intellectual Property and Technology from the American University's Washington College of Law, a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of Nairobi, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. June the person thoroughly enjoys Kenyan tea, lemon and honey on the side, is a legendary Monopoly buff, and is low-key addicted to the timeless, Grey’s Anatomy. She has also discovered a knack and talent for coloring by numbers and is an avid step counter.
