“I’m concerned about the calls for transparency as a universal solution to AI’s ethical issues,” Weinberger says. “Sometimes, yes, of course, we will want our AI to be understandable. But transparency is a tool, not an end in itself, and there are other ways of managing and controlling the AI that is helping us achieve important human goals.”
