Three Problems with India’s Draft Data Protection Bill

India is attempting to create a complex new framework for data protection that will require firms to physically host user data, but they might be moving too fast. Berkman Klein Fellow, Chinmayi Arun, discusses serious implications that the bill's features might pose for users, digital service companies, and governments in this Net Politics Blogpost. "This access to all personal data by the state poses an enormous threat to the right to privacy given the weak safeguards that exist in India against state surveillance. In combination with the data localization requirement, the Indian government will have unprecedented access to information about Facebook users."
