Tomo Nagashima is a learning scientist and Human-Computer Interaction researcher who works closely with education stakeholders to support human learning using technologies.
His research aims to understand and support meaningful human learning activities by designing advanced, AI-based learning technologies with stakeholders. He has worked with over 700 educators and school-aged children to design a wide range of learning technologies and instructional strategies, and to conduct school-based research.
He is also an advocate for the open education movement. At Creative Commons Japan and at the Open Education Group, he has worked with policy researchers, educators, and learners to identify needs and challenges that exist when openly sharing educational materials and to design practical solutions that help educators and learners effectively engage in open educational practices.
He is an Assistant Professor of Technology-Enhanced Learning at Saarland University in Germany. Prior to that, he completed his Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University. He also holds M.S. in Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon and M.A. in Learning, Design, and Technology at Stanford Graduate School of Education.
