Most the discussion sessions in the agenda will begin with the presentation of a short case study. The case study is meant to help illustrate one or several unexpected or interesting ways in which the Net serves as a public good.

After the presentation of the edge case, the session is opened up for general discussion. If needed, a session catalyst will help keep the discussion focused and active.

During each session, we'll work to record and otherwise document what we learn. In particular, we want to capture things like:

  • what needs to be researched?
  • what do the discussions make us want to do?
  • who should we share this information with?
  • what things are urgent and critical?
Day Session Description
1 Welcome and Introduction (30 minutes)

( Hecker, Lakhani, Maclay)

Colin, Frank and Karim set the stage for the symposium. Followed by a round of introductions.
1 In What Sense is the Net a Public Good? (2 hours)

( Weinberger, ...)

Before the symposium takes place, those of us who had time hammered out what we meant by a public good and discussed how we thought of the Net as a public good. David Weinberger and ??? will summarize and expand these discussions, leading us into a general discussion of the topic.
1 Access and Infrastructure Discussion (90 minutes)

(Case:  ??? by  ???, Catalyst:  ???)

...
1 Business Discussion (90 minutes)

(Case:  ??? by  ???, Catalyst: Eric von Hippel)

...
1 Optional Jam Session, Night One Unstructured time to discuss further. A good time to review what was discussed, plan for the next day or have some interesting discussions with some neat people.
2 Civil Society Discussion (90 minutes)

(Case:  ??? by Miller, Catalyst:  ???)

...
2 Arts and Culture Discussion (90 minutes)

(Case:  ??? by  ???, Catalyst: Lewis Hyde)

Is culture a public good? What does it mean when cultural artifacts cost nothing to copy? Is remixing art? How does mega-publishing of content change the idea of derivative works? Does the Net mean that we will all return to being active co-creators of culture?
2 Science Discussion (90 minutes)

(Case:  ??? by  ???, Catalyst:  ???)

...
2 Symposium Wrapup (30 minutes)

( Hecker, Lakhani, Maclay)

A summary of the event. Concrete ideas on doing meaningful work with the discussions.
2 Optional Jam Session, Night Two Unstructured time to discuss further. A good time to review what was discussed or to just have some interesting discussions with some neat people.
