Michael Schakow
I am a 2L from Berkeley, Calif. Before law school I worked as a lobbyist for five years for Sun Microsystems, first in Silicon Valley and then in Washington, DC. I have absolutely no formal technical training, but my job at Sun was to translate between engineers and policy makers, and I really liked it. I helped architect several enterprise deployments of federated identity management infrastructure for customers that wanted to develop new web services using the Liberty Alliance protocols (single sign-on, privacy protections for user data sharing, etc.) that allowed them to raise funds for political candidates in novel ways but still remain compliant with FEC regulations and privacy laws. I lobbied the US EPA on several eco-technology projects, such as the Energy Star program, and also spearheaded an effort to create an industry-wide "miles per gallon" metric for the energy efficiency of servers in data centers, which was supposed to allow server manufacturers to compete on the basis of efficiency as well as power.
