Open Source/Shared Source
In the module entitled "Alternative
to Intellectual Property," we provided you some information concerning
one of the most controversial topics in Internet Law: the shape and
merits of the "open source" software movement. During the real-time
program in July, we will devote one 90-minute session (on Wednesday, July
3) to this topic. At that session, Jason Matusow, Program manager
of the Shared Source Initiative at Microsoft Corp., will debate Prof. Larry
Lessig concerning the merits of various degrees or meanings of "openness"
in the design, refinement, and distribution of software. The Microsoft
Corporation has provided us three documents, which describe and defend
the corporation's position on this issue. In preparing for the July
3 session, you would find it useful to review these documents. You
are also invited and encouraged to discuss the arguments presented therein
in the Online Discusssion Forum.
