Re: [h2o-discuss] Welcome to h2o-discuss

eon and h20:

many thanks to eon for the clear and welcome overview of the background,
'charter' and scope for the organization and the ringing and
enthusiastic advocacy for its founding principles (and principals!)
which i found very encouraging both in general and for my own work in
this area... i found this VERY helpful as a framing 'document' and would
suggest that if an equivalent form of this info isn't already available
through the web site that it be made, in whatever modified form,
prominently and semi-permanently available through that means also...

in addition to its beneficial 'constitutional' aspect, though, the post
also raises, directly or indirectly, in its language, topics and focus,
a number of issues and questions that i think could helpfully stand
greater clarification, 'critique', elaboration and potential
're-direction'... that all from the standpoint of wholehearted support
for the underlying 'causes'..

i think this list is a great place to do that, so i'd like to 'initiate'
the process, in a lengthy follow-up post that i hope soon to give
reasonably coherent form, by examining in some sufficient but hopefully
not mind-numbing detail, the 'text' of eon's post, the original
(excellent) 'power of open-ness', as well as two other 'documents'
that have come up for discussion on this list: e. raymond's latest
'magic cauldron' and e. moglen's draft concerning 'free software and the
death of copyright', since taken together, as i believe these various
strands must, this will allow all the most important issues in this
domain to be flushed out and addressed directly... that all in the
spirit, as mentioned above, of giving some needed 'therapeutic attention
to the genome' for this project...

and i'll try to do that also within the context of what i hope to be a
useful/enlightening (if unavoidably somewhat self-serving) exposition of
my own work and projects in this area, which have a tremendous amount of
'overlap' w/ the h20 contents, and which, given the highly promising
initial framework you've already established, i'm now confident can find
a very synergistic, resonant, and mutually reinforcing place (to be
developed/determined) alongside the border or even within the
boundaries of the h20 projects...

and in passing i would also like to commend/acknowledge the cooperative
spirit (of shared 'well-intentions and purposes') displayed by those
participating so far on this list, that has been personally very
encouraging, and has produced a highly 'productive' and engaging
atmosphere that bodes well for the future success of these VERY
important undertakings... i hope this spirit can be maintained as a
larger and more diverse set of participants is drawn into the 'web'...
and as the inevitable tensions arise in crossing from (always and
necessarily idealized) conceptualization to realization... in any case
the (ongoing) battle to maintain the 'fidelity' of that elusive 'spirit'
is one of the most important tasks in building and maintaining this
'community'...and is by no means automatic, given the wide range of
'entropic' and opposing forces, and will require as much intelligent
attention as we can all bring to bear...

so more to come later...

cheers and thanks again for the excellent 'jump-start'
