Giuseppe Mazziotti

Giuseppe is an Italian attorney specializing in intellectual property law, media law, antitrust law and information technology law. He works as independent advisor in the fields of intellectual property and digital media and as ‘Of Counsel’ with Rome-based law firm Nunziante Magrone. He holds a Law Degree cum laude from the University of Perugia (2001) as well as a Master of Research (2003) and a Ph.D. (2007) from the European University Institute, Florence. Giuseppe is currently Research Fellow and Manager of the Digital Forum at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels.

From 2009 to 2011 he was an Assistant Professor of intellectual property law at the University of Copenhagen, where he also worked as leader of research projects funded by the EU Commission such as MEDIADEM (media policy-making in EU member states) and LAPSI (legal aspects of public sector information).

Giuseppe was a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley (2004/2005), and at Columbia Law School, New York (2010/2011), and was a Fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University (2011/2012).

In his career he has advised IFPI (Representing the Recording Industry Worldwide), the European Commission (DG INFSO), the European Parliament (DG for Internal Policies) and the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities on various projects concerning intellectual property law and information technology.

His publications include EU Digital Copyright Law and the End-User (Springer, 2008); Managing Online Music Rights in the European Digital Single Market: Current Scenarios and Future Prospects’ (Intellectual Property at the Crossroads of Trade, Edward Elgar, forthcoming); 'New Licensing Models for Online Music Services in the European Union: From Collective to Customized Management' (Columbia Journal of Law and the Arts, Volume 34, 2011); ‘Putting the Public into Public Domain: Rights Management of Sound Recordings Through Creative Commons’ (Technology and Competition – Technologie et Concurrence: Liber Amicorum Hanns Ullrich , Larcier 2009); ‘Did Apple’s refusal to license proprietary information enabling interoperability with its iPod music player constitute an abuse under Article 82 of the EC Treaty?’ (World Competition, Volume 28, 2005).

Giuseppe is also an accomplished musician and holds a Master's degree in Clarinet Performance (1997) and Chamber Music (2003) from the Music Academy of Perugia (Conservatorio di musica di Perugia). Giuseppe worked for ten years (1994-2004) as principal clarinetist for the Perugia Symphony Orchestra and as critic for the Italian radio broadcaster RAI Radio 3.
