Good Practices for University Open-Access Policies

Published

The following guide represents one version in a constantly evolving and growing compilation of recommendations exploring best practices for open access in the university setting. Since 2011, Stuart Shieber and Peter Suber have been developing the guide on a wiki in order to make continual revision easy. They released the first edition during Open Access Week 2012, and they've spent the year since then steadily enlarging and improving it.

From this page, you can access the first print and PDF editions. The new editions use the text as it stood in late September 2013.

The wiki edition will still contain the latest updates. But the new editions should make the guide more versatile and useful. Like the wiki edition, the new editions stand under Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licenses.

This work is supported in part by the Arcadia Fund.

About the Harvard Open Access Project

The Harvard Open Access Project (HOAP) fosters the growth of open access to research, within Harvard and beyond, using a combination of consultation, collaboration, community-building, and direct assistance. Open access makes knowledge accessible and reusable, accelerates the pace of discovery and discussion, maximizes the return on our investment in research, and speeds the development of all the benefits that depend on research, from new medicines and useful technologies to informed decisions, solved problems, and improved public policies. HOAP was launched in the fall of 2011.
