We are pleased to report that it is neither an over-eager spam filter nor the high price of oil that has been keeping the Filter from making its appointed rounds, but rather the altogether more wonderful phenomenon that is Berkman@10. In case you've missed our invitations and calls to action, much of the Berkman community has been hard at work putting together a run of scholarship, conversations, and institutional development that (we hope) is nothing short of decennial. From hosting the FCC for its hearings on net neutrality, to gathering with digital activists in Istanbul and chairing a new Internet Safety Technical Task Force, from releasing books including Access Denied, The Future of the Internet--And How to Stop It, and Born Digital (soon), to our tenth anniversary report and brand-new website, we have had a tremendous year. It began with Yochai Benkler's arrival and a terrifically generous grant from the MacArthur Foundation, and it is gathering steam as we near the main event on May 15-16. So while we attend to these matters, we wanted (again) to warmly welcome you to follow our collective adventures online, to contact us if you haven't received a Berkman@10 report and would like one, to make nominations for the first-ever Berkman Awards, and, above all, to join us for what will be a monumental (and fun) culminating event on “The Future of the Internet” -- that is, so long as you participate and help us to make it so.

The promise of cyberspace is just as great as it was ten years ago, if not greater. Some of the challenges we face in studying it, and in building out into it, have changed; others persist. The culminating event of the Berkman Center’s year-long tenth anniversary celebration, the Berkman@10 Conference on "The Future of the Internet” will offer a chance to reflect critically on the last ten years of the development of the Internet and to look ahead to the crucial questions we face in the next ten years of cyberspace. In tracing the trajectory of the past and attempting to lean into the future, what are the contours of the moment we find ourselves in? What are the most important questions that will propel us into the next decade? Please join us for what promises to be a unique gathering of Internet luminaries, cyberlawyers, entrepreneurs, activists, geeks, media makers and journalists, students, and more.

On the evening of May 16, the Berkman Center is hosting a gala dinner at which we will present the first-ever Berkman Awards, and more. (Information about the Awards is below.)
Individual plates are $275/person, and tables are available. The dinner will take place at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square.

BERKMAN CENTER ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR FIRST-EVER BERKMAN AWARDS
The Berkman Center is currently accepting nominations for the first Berkman Awards. The Berkman Awards will be presented to people or institutions that have made a significant contribution to the Internet and its impact on society over the past decade.
The primary awardee will receive $50,000, and five smaller awards will be given in specific categories such as: human rights/global advocacy; academic and intellectual leadership; pro bono work; infrastructure/communications tools; arts/culture/media; and news/information/journalism.
There are no conditions placed on how the award money must be spent. Nominations for the award will be accepted from the public until April 11, 2008. To nominate someone for these awards or for more information, go here.

TENTH ANNIVERSARY ANNUAL REPORTS
As part of Berkman@10, we produced a special, glossy annual report, complete with a short history of the center, a timeline, profiles of community members, 2006-2007 project overviews, and much more. The creation of the report involved the participation and generous contributions of every corner of Berkman’s network. The report can be downloaded here

*February 12, Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) voted in favor of a motion on open access policy.
*In February, we hosted an FCC en banc hearing on broadband network management practices.
*The Berkman Center is heading up a newly formed Internet Safety Technical Task Force comprised of leading Internet businesses and organizations.
*The OpenNet Initiative’s Access Denied: The Practice and Policy of Global Internet Filtering hit the shelves of booksellers everywhere.
*We launched a new Berkman website!
