Cloud Computing Workshop: Global Perspectives on the Cloud

December 2011

This workshop was the third in our series on legal and policy issues related to cloud computing. It was graciously hosted in Japan by Keio University, in collaboration with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, the NEXA Center for Internet & Society at the Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy, and the Research Center for Information Law at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

The workshop served principally as a substantive meeting dive deeply into a range of potential topical areas to explore in the project, with an eye towards international and global issues in cloud computing.  During the workshop sessions, collaborators and special guests, including government and civil society members, identified a number of areas for potential cross-cultural inquiry and analysis, including:

  • Interesting Case Studies for Global Comparisons: Approaches to e-health/smart healthcare; approaches to smart energy and smart grid/energy; disaster relief efforts and emergency communications; smart agricultural systems; big data breaches and losses faced by ICT companies.
  • Horizontal Topics for Comparative Analysis: Government approaches to investing in cloud infrastructure; shape, form, and models for multi-stakeholder efforts, including government and private-sector driven efforts; data protection practices in the cloud; standards for communication and transparency practices for consumers; approaches to and mechanisms for assessing risk
  • Global Dimensions and International Questions: Jurisdictional issues, dispute resolution systems, open data distribution, risk analysis, export controls.
