First Cooley Fellow Named at Harvard Law School’s Cyberlaw Clinic

Palo Alto, Calif. - Cooley Godward Kronish LLP announced today that Dena Sacco, a former federal prosecutor, has been named the inaugural Cooley Fellow at the Harvard Law School Cyberlaw Clinic at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society. Cooley established the fellowship in February 2009, and will support the position for the next five years.

Sacco, who has been a fellow at the Center since 2007, will continue to be an integral part of the Cyberlaw Clinic’s cutting-edge teaching and representation of clients on matters involving online speech and anonymity; protection of children using the internet; open access, digital copyright and fair use; software and music licensing; and patent reexaminations.

“Cooley has been one of the top high-tech law firms in the country for the past 35-40 years. Our partnership with the Berkman Center enables us to work closely with the very talented students and faculty at Harvard Law School on exciting new projects involving the internet and e-commerce,” said Eric Reifschneider, head of Cooley's technology transactions practice and a 1992 magna cum laude Harvard Law School graduate who has been a guest lecturer at a Berkman Center course this semester.

As co-director of the Internet Safety Technical Task Force, Sacco led more than 30 social network sites, internet service providers, technology companies and child safety experts in assessing online risks for minors and how new technologies can better protect them. She is a frequent author and lecturer in the area of child exploitation and the Internet.

“We’re thrilled that Dena will become the first Cooley Fellow,” said Cyberlaw Clinic director and Clinical Professor of Law Phil Malone. “Her extensive experience as an internet prosecutor and law teacher at Harvard will continue to provide tremendous value to our students and clients, and will ensure that the Clinic realizes the full benefit of Cooley’s generosity and ongoing collaboration in our Clinical program.”

A 1993 graduate of Harvard Law School, Sacco has served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Boston’s Major Crimes Unit and as counsel at the U.S. Department of Justice.
