Early blues, which evolved in the southern parts of the [[United States]], tended to have a simple [[twelve bar blues|twelve]] or [[eight bar blues|eight bar]] structure based on [[tonic chord|tonic]], [[subdominant chord|subdominant]] and [[dominant chord|dominant]] chords.
