Beyond Broadcast 2007: From Participatory Culture to Participatory Democracy

For 50 years broadcast media have played a powerful role in shaping
political culture and mediating citizen engagement in the democratic
process. Now a participatory culture is putting the tools of media
creation and critique in the hands of citizens themselves. We invite
you to MIT—to explore the means, the message, and the meaning of the
post-midterm, pre-presidential YouTube moment.

How Open Will Harvard Be to Internet & Society?

How Open Will Harvard Be to Internet & Society? That's the big question for the Internet & Society 2K7 Conference, which took place on May 31 and June 1, 2007. What would a more open Harvard mean or look like for faculty, for staff, for students, for alumni? Is there an understanding among all as to what open access is?

CyberOne: Teaching and Learning in Mixed Realities

"CyberOne: Law in the Court of Public Opinion" is the first class at Harvard University to be offered in part in Second Life, a 3-D virtual environment.

Co-taught by Professor Charles Nesson, Rebecca Nesson, and Gene Koo, CyberOne: Law in the Court of Public Opinion turns law and Harvard toward the creation of our future in a networked information economy. "CyberOne models a university relationship with the public of open-access," says Professor Nesson. "Our class is itself an argument for open access and its expression."

Jamaica & Restorative Justice

Berkman Center co-founder and Harvard Law School Professor Charlie Nesson discussed his Winter Term Evidence class's project on Jamaica, the Internet, and restorative justice. The class's project ties in to the Berkman Center's larger project in Jamaica, a long-term initiative toward rehabilitating countries hurt by globalization. The project's focus is work with the Jamaican corrections department and Roots FM Community Radio, using digital technology to improve rehabilitation programs for the Jamaican prisons and, more broadly, as an educational and developmental vehicle in that country.
