ROFLCon

The official ROFLCon site: http://www.roflcon.org

Mix up a bunch of super famous internet memes, some brainy academics, a big audience, dump them in Cambridge, MA and you've got ROFLCon.

It was a group dissection of internet culture. What makes internet culture work, why it works, how it works. We talked about where internet culture has been and where we think it's going.

A music show, with memes performing their work live. And then a big blowout party at the end, where everyone danced and rocked out.

Berkman’s Media Re:public project, funded by the John D. and Catherine
T. MacArthur Foundation, is undertaking an assessment of the state of
the field of participatory media within the overall news and
information environment. The research initiative will examine
historical developments from a forward-looking perspective, with the
goal of informing future research, policy-making and other
interventions. Based on input from a diverse group of media
practitioners, scholars and non-profit actors, Media Re:public will

Web of Ideas: The Future of the Music Industry, with special guest musician Brad Sucks

The traditional music industry is crumbling. From the dust comes ... BradSucks. Brad Turcotte is the very paragon of a Webby, open source musician. At his site, you can download his music for free or pay him a little money. You can reuse his music as you'd like, subject to the Creative Commons license. Not only can you remix it, but Brad posts especially good remixes. He has even open sourced the paint job for one of his guitars.

Web of Ideas: Is the Web Changing the Nature of Leadership?

It’s easy to find business and political leaders. But who are the Web’s leaders? Although the big online collaborative projects have nominal leaders, they play a very different role than do traditional CEO’s. The Web seems to be providing an alternative to the notion that business leaders are people imbued with special traits. In fact, Some of the traits and roles of traditional leadership are now becoming properties of the network itself. What effect might that have on leadership off the Web? Is online life so different that political and business leadership will continue unaltered?

Web of Ideas: Copyright: Designing from the Ground Up

"Designing Copyright from the Ground Up": Suppose we had the chance to start over again with copyright, designing it to accommodate the digital era and designing it to support the greatest public good. What would it look like? How would we manage the clash between the need for leeway with the complete and precise knowledge of use that networked usage provides?
