StopBadware.org is a partnership among academic researchers, technology industry leaders, non-profit organizations, and volunteers, all of whom are committed to protecting Internet and computer users from the threats to privacy and security that are caused by bad software.
We have two main areas of work. First, we have worked with the community to develop and maintain a definition of badware. We evaluate applications against this definition and use a carrot-and-stick approach to encourage software producers to stop producing badware.
Second, we collect data from partner companies about websites that contain, link to, or deliver badware. We use the data both to help address the problem directly and to research trends that allow us to identify new approaches to stopping web-based badware. We have learned, for example, that website owners, especially those who own small sites, often require education and support to remove badware from their compromised sites and to protect them from future infection. We have also learned that the carrot-and-stick approach mentioned above for software producers also works for hosting companies and network providers whose networks host large numbers of badware sites.
