Interoperability

Urs Gasser and John Palfrey are in the process of finalizing their forthcoming book Interoperability: The Promise and Perils of Highly Interconnected Systems, which is slated for release in June 2012. The book is inspired by their 2005 study and paper—“Breaking Down Digital Barriers: When and How Information and ICT Interoperability Drives Innovation”—which examined the relationship between interoperability and innovation in the ICT environment. The book builds a theory of interoperability, and then illustrates how that theory works and why interoperability is relevant for consumers, companies, governments, and the public. In addition to writing the book, the authors developed a series of case studies that focus on lessons learned from sectors where interoperability is critical, such as transportation, currency markets, and energy. Each case study explores the roles of law, policy, technology, market forces (e.g., innovation and economic incentives), and stakeholders, and how each of these can drive or inhibit interoperability. The interoperability team is also working to develop a set of associated resources online, including a wiki, blog, and student publications.

Digital Public Library of America and Europeana Announce Collaboration

Two major digital library networks have reached an agreement to collaborate in ways that will make a large part of the world’s cultural heritage available to a large part of the world’s population. The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), which will provide access to digital collections from libraries, museums, and archives in the United States, announced today that it will design its technical structure in a way to promote interoperability with that of Europeana, which has developed a similar system to link the major libraries, museums, and archives of Europe.

iLaw 2011

September 6-9, 2011

We are launching the next iteration of iLaw as an intensive, week-long Harvard Law School program and course just prior to the beginning of 2L and 3L classes at HLS. iLaw 2011 will bring Berkman faculty members together with colleagues from the Engineering School’s Center for Research and Computation and Society and others from around the University to engage in a collaborative teaching effort, aimed at defining the current state of play of the cyberlaw field, broadly defined, and developing an associated curriculum. In addition to HLS students, a select number of professionals, practitioners, entrepreneurs, lawyers, and others will be invited to exchange ideas about current debates, difficult questions, and emerging issues in the Internet space.

Interoperability In the New Digital Identity Infrastructure

This paper maps out multiple dimensions of interoperability in the emerging digital identity management infrastructure, with a view to promoting openness in this infrastructure. The paper provides a background to the infrastructure; an explanation of components, items exchanged, and interconnection flows; an account of interoperability at various levels; a look at the costs and benefits of interoperability; and a brief consideration of factors that influence interoperability and innovation, such as the market, law, and self-regulation. Because this technology is still developing, the paper seeks to offer a snapshot of the current landscape with a view to promoting discussion about the future.

Interop and Innovation

Last week, as part of the project on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Interoperability, a field of experts gathered in Weissbaden, Switzerland for a workshop hosted by the University of St. Gallen.Berkman Center Executive Director John Palfrey, a presenter at the workshop, descibed the process as "one in a series of such small-group conversations intended both to foster discussion and to inform our own work in this area of interoperability and its relationship to innovation in the field that we study.
