Sands Fish

Sands Fish is a data scientist and computational artist. He is a Fellow at the Berkman Center and a Research Affiliate at MIT's Center for Civic Media. He is also a Digital Humanities Fellow at MIT's HyperStudio, and organizes the Boston Creative Coders collective. He focuses on information aesthetics, network analysis, and text mining, applying these to reveal and map patterns in networked data structures such as the social web and linked open data.

As a senior member of the Media Cloud research team, Sands explores the state of news media online, leading the project’s data analysis efforts aimed at better understanding the networked public sphere.  He develops tools, modes of analysis, and visualizations on top of the project’s large archive of content from online media.

Before joining Berkman, Sands was a Senior Software Engineer at the MIT Libraries, where he designed interfaces for knowledge discovery, advocated for open data practices, and built APIs that enabled the mining of library data for advanced scholarship and visualization.
