Homophily, serendipity, xenophilia

getting smart about birds of a feather

As ROFLCon descended on Cambridge, Fellow Ethan Zuckerman was essaying an argument for why homophily, serendipity, and xenophilia are "useful concepts" for thinking through media attention and the challenges of global understanding in today's media ecosystem. Pulling together and linking to a variety of perspectives, Ethan's argument has helped to build and extend the conversation about the problems (and solutions) of homophily in digital media. Last week he sat down for a discussion on the issues with WNYC's On the Media.

It is perhaps fitting that Ethan's ...My heart's in Accra has been the venue for much of the comment and dialogue. Hopefully these links will tide us over while he takes a short hiatus from blogging.
