Indian Government Orders Blocking of "Inflammatory" Website
June 02, 2004
Government officials in Mumbai, India ordered Indian ISP to block the website,
HinduUnity.org, for allegedly inflammatory, anti-Islamic material. The
OpenNet Initiative -- a research partnership by the Berkman Center, the
Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto (Technical Research Director
Nart Villeneuve pictured right) and the
Centre for Security in International Society at the University of Cambridge -- investigated news reports of this censorship to confirm whether ISPs were complying with the order and whether additional websites were affected. The report (
OpenNet Initiative Bulletin 003) found some "unusual and unexpected collateral blocking" by Indian ISPs, including blocking of website hosted under the same IP address --
kahane.org -- that has been designated a "terrorist" website by the United States. Read the
Bulletin for more details.
