The US Justice Department has announced that it will drop its effort to breakup Microsoft as a penalty for the software giant's antitrust violations. Instead, the government will seek restrictions on Microsoft's conduct, such as banning exclusive contracts and forcing the company to allow computer makers to modify the Windows desktop.
