MICHAEL M. KRIEGER

Michael M. Krieger is a Los Angeles based attorney whose practice is devoted to high technology business issues, especially for software, multimedia and Internet-related development, acquisition, licensing, distribution and services.  This focus includes strategic counseling, litigation strategy and preventive methods to exploit and secure content, trademarks and other intellectual property.  Within the computer community, his clients have included both start-ups and industry leaders.  Internationally, in addition to transactions for private clients, he has assisted in programs related to intellectual property for government entities including the U.S. Commerce Department and the Brazil/UN Software Export project, and is providing strategic counseling to several international software and web-based initiatives.  He occasionally serves as an expert in computer related litigation.

With a long-time interest in both the conflict between trademark interests and domain name holders, and in the on-going Internet governance "wars," Mr. Krieger regularly writes articles and speaks on current developments in these areas.  He served as a special private advisor to Dr. Jon Postel, the late Internet pioneer/"czar" implemented the U.S. Government's mandate to transfer Internet policy making and control to a private corporation.

As a frequent speaker and author on computer law and business topics generally, Mr. Krieger has developed courses and conference programs for universities, the Software Publisher's Association, legal groups and other "IP consumers." He organized and chaired the 1988 International Conference on Computers and Law, participated in the Computer Law Delegation to China/Japan, co- organized the World Computer Law Congresses in 1991 and 1993, and is currently a member of the Executive Committee, and chairs the Computer Law Subcommittee, of the California Bar's Intellectual Property Section.  He is Editor-in-Chief of "New Matter," the IP Section's quarterly journal, and on the editorial board of Cyberspace Lawyer.

Holding degrees in mathematics from Caltech (B.S.) and UCLA (Ph.D.), Mr. Krieger spent ten years on the UCLA and MIT computer science and mathematics faculties, after which he was intern/scholar for information policy at the National Telecommunications and Information Agency and received his J.D. from UCLA; he also was a Fulbright Scholar/Visiting Professor (Computer Science) in Brazil.   Mr. Krieger remains actively connected with the UCLA Computer Science Department where he founded and leads two innovative graduate seminar series "Entrepreneurship: Technology Business Fundamentals" and "Entrepreneurship and E-Commerce." He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the California Israel Chamber of Commerce and of the Caltech Alumni Association.  He is currently on the Advisory Boards of the Caltech Enterprise Forum and the Los Angeles Business Technology Center.

Mr. Krieger is a partner in the newly formed Century City firm Krieger & Nunziato LLP which specializes in the business, intellectual property and litigation needs of emerging technology companies; he was of counsel to the venerable Bronson Bronson & McKinnon prior to its dissolution in 1999.  He may be reached at mkrieger@mcimail.com.
