General Overview
Why are you doing this at all?
The Internet & Society 2002 class is sufficiently large that we thought an online facebook might help students recognize each other
and get to know each other.
What if I don't want to be included in the facebook?
Just send an email to the facebook administrator.
Where did you get these pictures?
Some pictures are provided to us through the Harvard Law School and
others are provided by the Harvard
University Identification Office.
Pictures
What if I want to include a different picture, or no picture at all?
To change or remove your picture, find your name in the online facebook and choose the "Enhance my listing" link.
If you wish to change to a different picture, it should already be accessible on the web via the standard http://servername.org/directory/filename.jpg or .gif syntax,
and you will be required to enter this URL to make the customization. If you don't know what this means, you might ask
for help from a savvy friend in the class!
Any special restrictions on custom pictures?
To keep page load times fast, please use a relatively small picture (<10kb). For highest quality results, use a picture of exactly 140x148 pixels;
to avoid distortion, you must use a picture of this aspect ratio. If you don't know what this means, you might ask
for help from a savvy friend in the class!
Why is my picture missing?
Your picture could be missing because you're not an HLS or HU student,
because you requested a "privacy block" on your picture,
or because of an error in our database or in the database of the HLS Registar's Office.
You can use the procedure described above to include a custom picture of your own, or you can contact
the facebook administrator who will
attempt to determine the reason why your picture is missing. Note that pictures of Harvard students from beyond HLS
are not yet included on the site, but will be added in early February.
Listing Enhancements
How do I enhance my listing in the online facebook?
Find your entry in the facebook and follow the "Enhance my listing" link. In the subsequent screen, enter text
responses to questions of interest. When you press SUBMIT, your responses will automatically and immediately be included
in the online facebook.
What if I skip a question?
No problem. If you leave an answer blank, the system will omit that section of your listing in the facebook. So it's fine
to skip any questions you're not interested in.
What about the "Question you'd like to ask yourself?" and "Answer?" questions on the "Enhance..." form?
Use your own creativity to ask yourself an interesting question. Then answer it. Others in the class will enjoy learning that
much more about you.
What if I want to enhance my listing more than once?
After your first submission, you may write to the facebook administrator with
the details of your request. For fastest service, please be specific -- provide specific exact text for the answers you wish
to add or change. Alternatively, you may ask the facebook administrator to entirely delete your initial enhancement, allowing you to resubmit
a new enhancement.
Security
What kind of security are you using? How do you prevent others from changing my answers?
Once you enhance your listing once, the system will not accept a subsequent enhancement. So if you fill out the "Enhance..." form,
you guarantee that no one else can do so on your behalf. Also, the facebook system will automatically send you an
email confirmation when someone -- you or anyone else! -- enhances your record. If you believe the submission was made in error,
you'll be able to notify the facebook administrator of the problem, and we'll make every effort to straighten out the problem promptly.
Is this site open to the entire Internet?
No, it's not. Access to the facebook pages requires an IP address on either the Harvard or MIT network.
If you're having trouble with access to the facebook from such a location, please
let the facebook administrator know about the problem.
