Membership Implementation
Task Force
ICANN is pleased
to announce the launch of the first phase of the Membership Implementation Task
Force. Composed of 74 volunteers from
42 nations, the Membership Implementation Task Force will work to conduct
global outreach, recruitment, and education, with the goal of making ICANN's At
Large Membership <http://members.icann.org> diverse and representative,
and its elections fair and transparent.
The first
phase of the Task Force consists of 11 task groups that will focus on
membership outreach and recruitment.
Future task groups will be launched in the coming months to address
election oversight, election procedures and monitoring, fraud detection and prevention, and
membership information and design. The
objective is to keep the membership of the Task Force fluid, in order to
respond to At Large Membership needs as they arise.
Given the large
size of the Task Force, the chairs of the task groups will form an overall
steering committee to coordinate and share information. The chair of the steering committee, and
overall coordinator of the Task Force, is Eric Scace. The
objective of this structure is to tap the energies and enthusiasms of as many
volunteers as possible, without overwhelming ICANN's very small staff. The structure is therefore distributed --
the different task groups allow us to name dozens of individuals to this
effort, thus helping to generate some serious momentum to ICANN's outreach and
recruitment efforts; the steering committee
allows communication, coordination, and integration of the work of the task
groups.
ICANN is
very excited about the talents, diversity, and energy represented by this
group, and welcomes their leadership in ICANN's At Large Membership
structure. Nearly 300 individuals
expressed interest in volunteering for the Task Force – ICANN gratefully
acknowledges their spirit of volunteerism;
many of those not included in the first phase of the Task Force will be
asked to join future task groups.
As we
expect to add additional task groups and members, ICANN encourages interested
persons to contact Andrew McLaughlin at <ajm@icann.org>.
