Berkman Center Names Co-Directors of Clinical Program in Internet Law at Harvard Law School

Cambridge, MA – The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School announced today that it had appointed Bruce P. Keller and Jeffrey P. Cunard, partners at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, to co-direct the Center’s Clinical Program for the coming year. Keller and Cunard, who will be Senior Fellows at the Center, also have received faculty appointments as Lecturers on Law and will teach a Fall Term 2004 seminar entitled “Practical Lawyering and Internet Related Issues.”

“Bruce Keller and Jeff Cunard are absolutely at the top of their game and are among the best practitioners anywhere in the field of Internet law,” said John Palfrey, Executive Director of the Berkman Center. “We are extremely fortunate that they have agreed to devote so much time to teaching students and overseeing our clinical program in cyberlaw, while continuing in their practices. Our clinical students will learn first-hand how to translate their classroom knowledge to the actual practice of law, and we are very excited about the prospects for our clinical program in the coming year.”

“Over the years,” said Keller, “Jeff and I have been fortunate to have litigated a number of cutting-edge Internet-related cases. We see our role at the Center as a natural extension of that work.” “Bruce and I always have been interested in the evolution of the law applicable to the Internet, as well as representing clients in our practice,” said Cunard. “When we were approached by Prof. Jonathan Zittrain and John Palfrey to work with them at the Berkman Center, we decided it was too good an opportunity to pass up.”

The Berkman Center’s clinical program, under the leadership of outgoing clinical director Diane Cabell, has grown over the past several years from a small group of students each year to as many as thirty students in this coming year. The Center anticipates taking on an increased case-load in litigation matters. Before the start of the academic year, the Center also anticipates announcing the appointment of a third senior practitioner, from the public sector, to help direct the clinical program. The Berkman Center’s clinical program most recently contributed an amicus brief in a federal copyright case involving peer-to-peer networks, Capitol Records v. Alaujan (D. Ma. 2003), which can be found online at .

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School was founded to explore cyberspace, share in its study, and help pioneer its development.
