Prior to Intel, Nassim developed interactive learning experiences for the SPARKscience platform at PASCO scientific. Nassim also has five years experience teaching high school biology teacher. In 2008, she received National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification (AYA Science) and a Master of Arts in Education from the University of South Carolina. Before his appointment at the department, Asare held leadership roles in product management, marketing, and development at IBM and Computer Associates. He also serves as senior advisor for the Simmons Memorial Foundation, a mentoring organization for college bound high school students and on the board of directors for the IVG Foundation, which serves college students. Asare holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Wake Forest University and a master’s degree in business administration from the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. Jon believes teachers should ask one question: What is best for my students? Answering this question led him to start flipping his classroom in 2006-2007 school year. He is considered one of the pioneers of the flipped class movement, wrote a book on the flipped class, writes a blog on all things flipped, has a popular youtube channel, and manages a network of over 3000 educators flipping their classes . In 2010 he was a semi-finalist for Colorado Teacher of the Year and was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching in 2003. He is currently the Lead Technology Facilitator at The Joesph Sears School, in Kenilworth Illinois.

Ed has been working since 2006 on the idea that the internet should be moving more content between language communities - specifically, he has been working with Meedan to explore crowdsourced hybrid (humans plus machines) approaches to web translation to bridge Arabic and English speaking communities on the web. Meedan has released two global Educational platforms - Yallah Forum focused on informal discussions between students, and C2C (Classroom to Classroom) focused on conversations between classroms. Ed sits on the Open Education Technology Advisory Group for the Qatar Foundation International, and was an invited speaker at the 2011 WISE conference. He is a co-chair of the U.S.-Palestinian Partnership (UPP) and the Middle East Strategy Group of the Aspen Institute. Joi Ito included Ed in his 2008 book Freesouls, portraits of 296 people working to build the open web. Ed holds a US patent on hybrid human and machine translation and has been published in national press including the NY Times, New Republic, and Mother Jones, and has been interviewed on national and international radio news programs like NPR, BBC, and CBS. He attended Carleton College where he received a B.A. in philosophy. When he is not editing staff bios and sending emails, Ed folds laundry and cooks with garlic for his family in Woodacre, California.

Linda Burch

Linda Burch is a co-founder and Chief Education and Strategy Officer of Common Sense Media, a not-for-profit dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and the independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology. Linda leads Common Sense Media’s education efforts, new program and strategy development. She is the architect of Common Sense Media’s Digital Literacy and Citizenship program that includes an OER K-12 curriculum developed in partnership with the Harvard Graduate School of Education that is being used in over 28,000 schools in the US and 1000 schools around the globe. The Hewlett Foundation funded the initial research and development of the initial middle school curriculum.

Neil Butcher

Neil Butcher is based in South Africa, from where he has provided policy and technical advice and support to a range of national and international clients regarding educational planning, uses of educational technology and distance education, both as a full-time employee at the South African Institute for Distance Education (SAIDE) from 1993 to 2001 and as Director of Neil Butcher & Associates. He has worked with various educational institutions, assisting with transformation efforts that focus on effectively harnessing the potential of distance education methods, educational technology, and OER. Neil has travelled extensively through the world conducting research on higher education, distance education, and educational technology for a range of organizations, governments, and donors. He is currently working with SAIDE on its OER Africa Initiative, which is funded by the Hewlett Foundation and is managing the Partnership for Higher Education in Africa’s Educational Technology Initiative.

Steve Carson

Steve is External Relations Director for MIT OpenCourseWare. His responsibilities include sustainability initiatives; strategic partnerships with other organizations; MIT OpenCourseWare's support of opencourseware projects at other institutions; special projects in priority areas; and project evaluation. Steve also served as the first president of the OpenCourseWare Consortium from 2008 to 2011, where he oversaw the incorporation of the organization as an independent non-proft, secured funding to support its operation and helped grow membership to include more than 250 universities globally. He currently serves on the organization's board of directors. Prior to joining the MIT OpenCourseWare team, Steve served as Associate Director of Emerson College's Division of Continuing Education in Boston, where - in addition to managing core academic activities of the division - he developed and taught Emerson's first asynchronous, Web-based distance learning course. Steve earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College, and taught creative and expository writing there for five years.

Carla leads Mozilla's Open Badges project and acts as the liaison to Mozilla's Learning Group. She oversees communication outreach efforts and strategizes on badge assessment, implementation and application. Currently she's focused on badge system design. Carla has an MA in media psychology and social change and a BFA in graphic design and writing.

Cathy Casserly

Catherine M. Casserly is CEO of Creative Commons (CC), a global nonprofit that enables sharing and reuse of creativity and knowledge through the development of legal tools and infrastructure. With affiliates in 70 countries around the world, CC works to realize the full potential of the internet. CC licenses are currently used on more than 450 million works. Cathy’s career has been dedicated to equalizing educational opportunity and supporting the developing openness movement. As the Director of the OER Initiative at The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, she managed more than $100 million in investments to harness the efficiency and effectiveness of knowledge sharing. At the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Cathy spearheaded work in the areas of transparency and technology, including a continuous performance improvement system to create alternative mathematics pathways for community college students. Cathy has been instrumental in supporting many young organizations and currently sits on the boards of Startl and Peer-2-Peer University, and serves on advisory committees for MIT OpenCourseWare and the University of the People. She earned her Ph.D. in the economics of education from Stanford University and a B.A. in mathematics from Boston College.

Gay Clyburn

Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Gay Clyburn is associate vice president, public affairs and is responsible for external relations, marketing and communications, publishing, electronic communications and special events. She has been with the Foundation since 1999. She came to the Foundation from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities where she directed communications and developed the association's public affairs, and integrated interactive communications and diversity programs. She has a background in higher education communications at both the national and campus levels and has written and spoken on media training, strategic planning, crisis communications and public higher education issues. Clyburn has a master of liberal arts degree from Stanford University and a B.A. in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Robert Cummings

With #Pete Forsyth Robert Cummings is planning the Open Education Collaborative Documentation Project, which will provide opportunities for OER experts to work together on improving Wikipedia content to both enhance the success of their OER projects and public awareness of OER generally. Cummings has been using Wikipedia as a teaching tool since 2004. In 2011 his book Lazy Virtues: Teaching Writing in the Age of Wikipedia (Vanderbilt UP: 2009), won the thirtieth annual MLA Mina Shaughnessy Prize for outstanding scholarly work with application to the teaching of English. His current research continues to focus on how network knowledge is reshaping higher education and redefining the cultural value of rhetoric.

Sir John Daniel spent 17 years as a university president in Canada (Laurentian University) and the UK (Open University) before joining UNESCO as Assistant Director-General for Education in 2001 and serving as President of the Commonwealth of Learning from 2004-2012. Vicki Davis, full time high school teacher, is the co-founder of the Flat Classroom Projects which have connected students from kindergarten through college. Erhardt Graeff has worked in OER the past few years as a consultant for FinalsClub.org and a research assistant at the Berkman Center under Carolina Rossini. In 2009, he and Carolina studied the American Educational Materials industry, looking for the political and economic opportunities for expanding OER development and use. He most recently worked at Harvard Project Zero studying youth perspectives on digital media. Erik Hofer

Erik Hofer provides operational and strategic leadership to the Medical School Information Services (MSIS) organization in the areas of learning support infrastructure, overseeing MSIS’s applied research and development, instructional design, and professional development support departments. Hofer also directs the Office of Enabling Technologies within MSIS, leading the applied research and development of strategic technologies and services. His research activities have included (1) the development and evaluation of high performance collaboration technologies, (2) the implementation of a national-scale training program for computational science and engineering education that leverages collaboration technologies, and (3) investigations into the sociotechnical factors that enable high-performing scientific and engineering collaborations. Sally Johnstone

Sally M. Johnstone is the Vice President for Academic Advancement at the Western Governors University, a competency-based, on-line institution headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Prior to joining WGU in October 2011, she was the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at a traditional comprehensive university, Winona State University in Minnesota, USA. She also spent over 15 years at the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Dr. Johnstone’s experiences include work on policy issues for higher education institutions and system organizations, inter-institutional collaborations, quality assurance issues, project development and evaluation, and international projects. She has worked with UNESCO on education and open educational resource issues for over a decade, and currently serves on the U.S. UNESCO Commission. Dr. Johnstone also serves on the editorial boards for Change magazine (USA) and the Journal of Open Learning (UK). She has authored dozens of articles, books, and reports on issues of integrating information and communication technology into academics. Johnstone earned her Ph. D. in experimental psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.

Kim Jones is the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Curriki, a non profit organization focused on improving education through technology for children.

Kim was formerly an Executive with Sun Microsystems for over 20 years. Most recently Kim was President and Managing Director for Sun UK & Ireland. In this role she oversaw all sales and managerial functions within Sun's UK operations, across all technology lines of business.

Prior to accepting the role of UK MD, Kim was Vice President of Global Education, Government and Healthcare, where she headed up a team committed to providing advanced technologies and services to key constituencies in the public sector. It was during this time that Kim established education as an independent line of business for Sun. During Kim’s leadership, Curriki was incubated in the education development community of Java.net, better known as the Global Education and Learning Community. Realizing the value that such a contribution would bring to the teaching community, Kim was instrumental in leading the charge to make Curriki a non-profit, committed to advancing the open source educational resources movement.

Prior to this position, Kim held a number of general management, sales and marketing roles at Sun where she had extensive global experience working in over 100 countries around the world including Europe, Asia, Latin America, the United States and all of the emerging markets.

Kim has been active in driving policy initiatives, evidenced by her testimony before the Congressional Web based Education Commission in the USA. She is also regularly featured as an honorary speaker on the impact of technology in education at influential meetings around the world, including NCTET, the Worldwide Education & Research Conference (WWERC) in the United States, Europe, and Asia, and other key public sector forums.

In addition to her role at Curriki, Kim is a member of the MIT Open Courseware Industry Advisory Council.

Kim has received numerous awards and recognition throughout her career including the Sun Leadership Award, the prestigious YWCA Award for Women in Business, and in 2006, she was inducted into the Women in Technology International (WITI) Hall of Fame. Kim has an honorary PHD from the University of Edinburgh, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of California, San Diego.

Anne Margulies is University Chief Information Officer at Harvard, where she provides strategic leadership, planning, and management of technology programs that focus on the University’s instruction, research, administrative, and IT infrastructure needs. In addition to her institution-wide technology planning and coordination role, Anne directly oversees the IT functions of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Central Administration.

Anne represents Harvard on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center, a ground-breaking collaboration of five universities (Boston University, Harvard, MIT, Northeastern University, and the University of Massachusetts) and the Commonwealth, to develop a $95M, 90,000 square foot, research and high performance computing datacenter in Holyoke, MA. The datacenter is under construction and slated to be operational in early 2013.

Before returning to Harvard—she had been Assistant Provost and Executive Director for Information Systems in the late 1990s—Ms. Margulies was Assistant Secretary for Information Technology and CIO for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In this capacity she developed and implemented a statewide strategic plan for IT and oversaw consolidation of a vast patchwork of agency IT organizations, operations, datacenters, and networks into a coherent statewide structure. She had oversight responsibility for $500M in annual IT spending and led an IT community of more than 2000 professionals providing statewide computing, networking, and applications development services.

Prior to her service with the Commonwealth, Anne was founding Executive Director of MIT OpenCourseWare, MIT’s internationally acclaimed initiative to publish the teaching materials for their entire curriculum openly and freely over the Internet. She was the founding Chair of the OCW Consortium, an international organization comprised of over 300 universities around the world working together to share educational materials. Anne’s career started in systems support and marketing at AT&T.

Ms. Margulies has been recognized for her IT leadership accomplishments. In 2009 she was a finalist for CIO of the Year Award given by the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick selected her as the sole Massachusetts state government nominee for the National Leadership in Public Service Award. In 2010 she was selected as one of the Top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers by Government Technology.

Anne serves on several civic, charitable, and professional boards and committees including Heading Home (housing and supportive services for homeless and low-income families and individuals); the Sabre Foundation (learning materials and technologies for developing and transitional societies worldwide); and the Massachusetts Court Management Advisory Board. Formerly, she was a member of the National Academies Forum on Information Technology and Research Universities and the Open Learning Exchange Advisory Board.

Gary W. Matkin, Ph.D. is responsible for all aspects of the academic programs and operations of University Extension, Summer Session and the UCI Distance Learning Center. University Extension offers over 2,400 courses per year to about 35,000 students annually. Summer Session offers over 800 courses to 12,000 students each summer, including 32 online undergraduate courses that have served over 2,000 students over the last three years. The combined budgets of the three units exceed $58 million annually. The UCI Distance Learning Center creates and delivers online courses to distance students. Its activity generates over $5 million per year and it delivers over 130 courses per term. Matkin currently serves as the treasurer of the OpenCourseWare Consortium. Steve Midgley is a senior adviser to the US Department of Education. As an adviser, his principal areas of work are Race to the Top, Race to the Top Assessment and the Learning Registry. Previously Steve served as Deputy Director of Education Technology at the US Department of Education from June 2010 to January 2012. Prior to arriving at Education, he was the Director of Education at the FCC, where he headed the team which developed the Education chapter of the National Broadband Plan. Prior to government service he was the principal of Mixrun, a CTO consultancy for a number of for-profit and education sector organizations. Mixrun’s clients included California Department of Education’s project called Brokers of Expertise, which uses on-line and real world systems to share and build the expertise of educators. Steve also served as a Program Manager for the Stupski Foundation for six years, designing and implementing grants for technology in K-12 education. This work involved intensive on-the-ground implementation work with District and State agencies around country. Steve was also the founding Vice President of Engineering for LoopNet Inc., a commercial real estate listing firm. He designed and built LoopNet's technology and web systems from its inception. LoopNet remains a successful business and is currently listed on NASDAQ.

Larry Rosenstock

Larry Rosenstock is CEO and founding principal of [www.hightechhigh.org High Tech High] , a network of eleven K-12 public charter schools in California, and is Dean of the High Tech High Graduate School of Education. Larry taught carpentry in urban high schools in Boston and Cambridge and was principal of the Rindge School of Technical Arts, and of the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Robert Schuwer (1955) received an MSc in Mathematics at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (1980) and an MSc Computer Science at the Eindhoven University of Technology (1989). On the latter university he did his PhD in 1993 on a thesis about knowledge base systems. Robert’s working experience includes teaching mathematics in secondary education, consultancy for ICT related issues, assistant professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology (department Management Science) and CTO in a software company.

Currently, he is associate professor at the Open Universiteit Nederland (OUNL). Since 2006 the majority of his work is about OER. He was appointed project leader for the OpenER-project at the OUNL in 2006, which was the first OER project in The Netherlands.
