About the Survey Toolkit
The Survey Toolkit is designed to collect experiential data about how computers and the Internet are being used in schools around the developing world. The four surveys comprising this toolkit seek to address data deficits at both the school and policy levels, and give useful and actionable information about the integration of ICT in education.

Rationale
All around the world, educators, academics and policymakers are faced with similar challenges when planning, adapting and evaluating the uses of information technologies in education. These challenges are compounded by difficulties in measuring and evaluating the nature of the impact of technology on learning in terms of both the process and the outcomes. Much of the available information is confined to a limited number of physical indicators related to computer infrastructure -- numbers of machines, connections or students -- administrative indicators -- like the existence of technology in education programs -- and personal opinions. This 'Survey Toolkit' is designed to extend this understanding to what is actually happening inside schools where ICTs are present, by querying directly users about their experiences with technology.

Method
The questions posed in these surveys are meant to investigate major issues, successes, problems and experiences of teachers, students, heads-of-school and computer administrators related to the uses of information technologies in schools. The four user-group surveys seek to illuminate the enabling environment, access, use and impact of ICT in education. They are composed of questions that cover a range of topics, focusing on infrastructure, professional development, pedagogy and curriculum, and school technology policy, while considering the related issues of planning, finance, attitudes, and physical environment.

Results
Results from the implementation of the Survey Toolkit can offer valuable insights for schools and networks of schools, providing a nuanced image of the technology experience from multiple perspectives and participants, and the capacity to measure changes over time. Leaders can identify specific areas that need improvement or that have been successful, and integrate this knowledge into their strategic planning process. The companion Resource Toolkit complements these efforts by providing targeted guidance to online materials.

Our Goal
The ultimate goal of the Survey and Resource Kits is to benefit schools and their students through improved understanding based on inquiry and informed action. Each additional contribution to our international database of survey results will improve our collective capacity to explore the complexities of education and ICT. We hope that this project will help foster a larger global initiative to investigate the impact of information and communication technologies on education.

How to Participate
There are two principal ways in which your organization can benefit from our online Survey Toolkit: either by downloading it in PDF files for your own implementation and use, or by formal participation in the Global Networked Readiness for Education Project, in which case we will assist your organization to implement the survey collaboratively on- and/or off-line.
