Skypecast #2 with Sokari Ekine

Sokari Ekine

Sokari Ekine – aka “Owukori” – is one of the best known and most widely-read bloggers focused on Africa. Writing from her home in Andalucia, Spain, her two blogs – Black Looks and Afrotecnik – cover stories from all over the continent, with a special focus on women's issues and on her native Nigeria.

Our conversation, recorded via Skype yesterday afternoon, includes thoughts about the role of mobile phones in increasing connectivity in Africa, obstacles that make it hard for Africans to blog and the importance of calling attention to human rights issues. Just as we're getting into a discussion of the US “war on terror”, the line goes dead. As it turns out, we weren't cut off due to sinister government surveillance, but due to my fiscal and technical incompetence…

It's a great listen, right up to the abrupt end. And we're going to get Sokari back on the line soon to continue the conversation. In the meantime, Sokari offers a few blogs for the Global Voices aggregator… and for anyone looking for exciting voices from Africa:

TRAE days, from Abuja, Nigeria.
