Global Voices on Radio Open Source

Radio Open Source, a new public radio show hosted from Cambridge, Massachusetts by Chris Lydon, devoted its second pilot show on Friday entirely to Global Voices. The show featured conversations on the phone with bloggers Hossein Derakhshan (Hoder), Ndesanjo Macha, Dina Mehta, Steve McDermott, and Global Voices co-founder Ethan Zuckerman, with me sitting in the studio.

Click here, have a listen, and let us know what you think. Ethan and I were thinking maybe we ought to try and do regular Global Voices podcasts.

Which brings us to another point. Right now we're working on an aggregator of written blogs… but we really ought to do aggregators of audio podcasts – and eventually, video – from around the world.

If you are already doing podcasts, videocasts, etc. , or if you know people who are doing interesting podcasts and videocasts from countries around the world. Please hit the “comments” section and let us know!!

I’m not trying to shut down a good idea here, please don’t get me wrong, I too think that such a media content collection would be wonderful. But instead of building a new aggregator, would not it make sense to try to somehow put it under the PRX umbrella? That would also allow free access, but could also serve as a new means for spreading the word about what’s happening in the world.

Of course I’m not sure what Jake’s take on this, but it could be a topic for discussion on Tuesday Luncheon maybe.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • Henrik, you’re right we should definitely talk about ways to use the existing PRX structure to aggregate podcasts from around the world.

  • I’m not sure the PRX umbrella is the right one, guys. PRX is designed to create very high quality audio for sale to and broadcast by American public radio stations. We’re talking about collecting lower quality podcasts for free sharing and exchange. While I agree that we shouldn’t reinvent the wheel, I worry a bit that we’d really be shoehorning our goals within PRX’s infrastructure. It wouldn’t be a ton of work to create a feed of GV-themed podcasts, if we knew where to find them…
