Bahrain: Bloggers in Danger

Mahmood is afraid that Bahrain is about to become even a more dangerous place to blog from, specially that the Public Prosecutor is now looking into 46 websites, which they think might be transgressing various offences including the Press Law(in Arabic) .

  • It’s not 46 websites, but 46 transgressions as defined by the Press and Publications office (aka the government censor who also pose as the main anti-piracy office, thus mixing the two up in an attempt to gain some ‘international’ recognition), these transgressions could be anything from pirated material distribution or use, publishing something against the archaic press and publications law number 47 or indeed using the same law 47 against any number of websites. The truth of the matter is that we don’t know what those 46 cases submitted to the Public Prosecutor are.

  • Could those 46 cases also mean they’ve taken reblogs such as ours into the fray for prosecution? Is there some place we can obtain a copy of the mentioned media/internet/publishing laws in English? Thanks.

  • I don’t think it is available for the public, or if it will ever be!
