Fellowship Program

10/29/09 Update: In addition to the general call for fellows, we are currently accepting applications for 2 specific fellowships: we are looking for a Broadband Project Fellow to join this year's class, and an Academic Fellow for the 2010-2011 academic year.  For the Broadband position, please note that you must submit your application through the jobs.harvard.edu website.

Faculty appointments are not made by the Berkman Center. Those seeking a faculty or adjunct appointment should contact the Dean of Harvard Law School.

Fellowships

About the program:  The Berkman Center hosts a robust and diverse community of fellows for one year fellowships in Cambridge, MA.  Berkman Center fellows play a crucial role in discovery, learning, and engagement and will continue to be a driver of our success and a foundation of our community. Fellows are essential to the Berkman Center’s network as nodes of intelligence, insight, energy, and knowledge-sharing: they help to drive projects from within and to bring fresh ideas and skills into our community.

As Ethan Zuckerman, longstanding Berkman fellow and current member of the Fellowship Advisory Board wrote in our 2007 Berkman@10 annual report, “Many are geeks who are fascinated by law, or lawyers who dream of being geeks.  Some are internationally famous, like Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales.  Others are simply respected by everyone who’s ever worked with them, like professor and activist Wendy Seltzer.  Some fellows use their time at Berkman to generate original scholarship…others use the Berkman Center as an incubator for new projects...In a digital age full of virtual connections, the fellows program is a reminder that sharing ideas face to face is indispensable.”

Terms of a fellowship: Fellows are appointed for one year terms. A committee of Berkman faculty grants appointments after reviewing current applications. Fellowships are generally awarded to those who already have experience in topics related to Internet and society and wish to add new knowledge to the field.  We will consider applicants from all disciplines.

In addition to unique and individualized work plans, fellows responsibilities include interacting with, supporting, and learning from and with fellow fellows and the larger Berkman community through events, discussions, writings, and  research collaborations.

Payment and benefits:  Payment and other administrative determinations are made on a case-by-case basis.  A limited amount of financial support is available for fellows, and a fully stipended project-based fellow receives $48,000 per year.

No other benefits are provided, therefore fellows must make their own housing, insurance and transportation arrangements.

To apply: If you wish to be considered for a 2010-2011 academic year fellowship, please send us the following by email by the December 31, 2009 deadline:

  • A concise yet comprehensive outline for your proposed study
  • A curriculum vitae
  • Two letters of reference, including contact information
  • A digital copy in English of either your most recent publication or any other piece of your work that is related to Internet research. URLs for online copies of such material are preferred.
  • Funding requirements.  If you have obtained or are looking to obtain funding from a home institution, through grants or other awards, or via other means, please indicate this in your application.
  • Dates of residency

We are interested in knowing the particulars of your resource proposal and what expertise you bring to the project. Please explain how your proposal might fit with one of our projects.

Project-based, off-cycle fellowships may arise as needs develop at any point in the year.  To see if there are any open fellowship opportunities with Berkman projects, check out our employment page.
