BREAKING NEWS: Computing Research Association Files Declaration Supporting Felten in DMCA Challenge

Calling the issue fundamental to free expression and academic research, the Berkman Center for Internet & Society represented University of Washington professor Edward Lazowska and the Computing Research Association (CRA), who on August 13 submitted a declaration of support for Princeton University professor Edward Felten in a lawsuit asserting the right of computing researchers to reveal the findings of their academic work.

Felten and a team of researchers cracked the SDMI digital music protection scheme in response to a public challenge, but were then forced to withdraw a conference paper on the topic when the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the SDMI Foundation threatened litigation—citing provisions in the controversial Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and others filed suit last month on behalf of Felten and his team, asking for a declaratory judgment that the team has First Amendment and other rights to share its findings with the world at large.
