Background:
Only 30% of people in the developing world have access to the Internet - less than half of the number in the developed world. Among those being left furthest behind are women and children – including children living with disabilities, those out of school, those who are unaccompanied migrants – and other vulnerable groups. As part of a series of UNICEF talks on innovation for children and innovation for equity, the Boston Activate Talk will look at creative ways to increase Internet access for underserved and marginalised communities, especially focusing on children and young people.

The Boston Activate Talk will examine: What types of innovations are needed to connect the unconnected? What are the key enabling factors and challenges? How important is scalability? How do we ensure sustainability? How do we go beyond minimal access to full benefits of the Internet & related technology?

The Boston Activate Talk is part of the Digitally Connected Symposium co-hosted by the Berkman Center for Internet & Society and UNICEF: ‘Towards a Global Community of Knowledge and Practice around Children, Youth, and Digital Media’, 28 – 30 April 2014, Cambridge, MA
