Professor Peter Berkowitz
Department of Government
Littauer Center 323

Dear Professor Berkowitz,

Thank you for your letter of October 14, responding to mine of September 17. I have also today seen recent correspondence on this matter between Professor Nesson and yourself, and Professor MacFarquhar, and the memo of today from Professor Nesson to the Members of the Government Department.

I note in the latter that it is stated that your next step will be to contact the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in FAS. The Guidelines for the Resolution of Faculty Grievances provide, under clause 2, that: "If the issue cannot be resolved satisfactorily. . . the faculty member may consult on a confidential basis with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, or with a designated equal opportunity advisor within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, as appropriate."

In this case we would like to suggest that you consider raising this matter with Professor Marjorie Garber or Dean Elizabeth Doherty, both designated affirmative action officers in FAS.

Alternatively, you may proceed directly to the Docket Committee phase of the process.

Please let me know if I can help you in take this next step.

Sincerely,

John Fox
