Subject: The Peter Berkowitz Story: Pass it ON
Dear Michael,
Our letter, which we are posting today, addresses procedural defaults in
the process that President Rudenstine used in denying Peter Berkowitz
tenure. The idea that our proper appeal from a final decision by the
President of the University is to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and
Sciences is patently ridiculous. Are you suggesting that Dean Knowles could
reverse the President's decision?
If the Joint Committee, after due consideration, decide that it is not the
proper body to consider this matter, then I would consider the next step to
be to the Harvard Board of Overseers.
What do you say we cut the shit and get down to it. Neil can look great
backing a move for reform to lead us into the new millenium. I've narrowed
the charges down to a bare procedural minimum Neil could admit to without
losing face. I can convene a conference of the finest political scientists
and theorists to consider the work of Peter Berkowitz, then let Neil pick a
new ad hoc and we'll take our chances from there. Come on mon, get it done.
Sincerely,
Charlie
