Dear Dean Knowles and Members of the Docket Committee:

My advisor, Professor Nesson, and I were struck by former Dean Henry Rosovsky's remark in the Harvard Crimson that my appeal on procedural grounds of President Rudenstine's decision to deny my tenure is unprecedented: "I don't know of a situation where there's been this kind of appeal" ("Berkowitz Prepares to File Formal Grievance Over Tenure Denial," Crimson, December 14, 1998, p. 1).

Since the appeal on procedural grounds of a presidential decision to deny tenure is unprecedented and since the issues that I raise in the formal grievance that I filed with you on January 6th are both sensitive and complex, Professor Nesson and I respectfully request the opportunity to come before the Docket Committee, explain our case, and answer any questions you may have.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Peter Berkowitz
Associate Professor of Government
