I AM Columbia

The Columbia University at Chicago Second Life campus was created and maintained by the Interactive Arts and Media department students as well as staff and is open to the public. They hold classes for their students and display virtual and digital representations of art there. They have a few galleries and places to showcase student art such as the ones below.

The island employs students to create buildings and features on the island. For instance, the bus station pictured below is a work in progress by a student employed by the university.

The student I talked to mentioned that it's difficult to meet his friends in Second Life, but that it is a great place to build and display their art work in a public place.
