Location
The real life Hydrate Chicago is one of the more popular gay establishments in the Boystown neighborhood of Chicago. Hydrate Chicago in Second Life shares the same address on Halstread Street as the real life club. The exterior of the club in Second Life matches its real life exterior, with posters displayed on the walls for upcoming events at both the Second Life and real life establishments.
Layout
Hydrate Chicago's interior layout is almost identical to the real life club. There is a small lounge in the front room where visitors enter the club. The lounge has blue walls with a bar where visitors can order drinks when a bartender is present. On one wall, there is a large poster of the advertisement for Absolut Vodka featured on the TV show Sex and the City. Through the large doorway, there is a dance floor where visitors can dance, as well as a stage with a catwalk for more adventurous dancers. There is a disco ball hanging from the ceiling and posters advertising various nightly events at the club are displayed on the red walls. There are also high-top tables and stools where people can sit and chat with other visitors.
Music
In the room with the dance floor, visitors have the ability to act as the DJ for the entire club by using Shoutcast, a free internet radio service. There is a sign on the wall explaining how to use Shoutcast and providing the login information needed to make the music that the user has selected play in Hydrate. This is a fun, interactive feature that allows users to share their favorite dance songs with other visitors.
