Building Step3: Sandboxes
From CyberOne Wiki
Common sandboxes include the Public Sandbox Platform at Mauve (112,112,34) and Columbia (128,128,0).
20 builder classes are taught for free at 3pm, the notecard says it all.
Watch out for runaway tornadoes and other scripted "acts of God".
There are actually quite a few public sandboxes available out there.
Most likely to lure hapless builders into buying wares they need.
For example, the Builders Heaven Sandbox on Hewes (74,199,86)
Boasts a 7000 sqm public sandbox, yet is mostly a shopping mall.
Heron Island (224, 242, 22) on the other hand is quite worthwhile.
Providing a quiet atmosphere with many building tutorials (and bonfires).
Speaking of tutorials and sandboxes, check out New Citizens Incorporated on Kuula (54, 175, 29).
Geared towards the newbie, NCI offers many builder classes and related training sessions.
Be sure to grab the weekly schedule from the kiosk for upcoming events.
One drawback is the 2-hour autoreturn in the public sandbox.
I also enjoyed the Aloha Free Paradise (41,159,22) sandbox.
Which allows you to build to your hearts content in Paradise.
At this point, it might be worthwhile to share a few thoughts.
Things to keep in mind when creating and working with primitives:
1) Each sim / area in SL is restricted to a limited number of prims.
This ensures a consistent user experience while navigating thru SL.
And maintains performance benchmarks of SL hardware / software.
2) Sandboxes usually reclaim their prims at a specified interval.
These "autoreturns" are usually somewhere between 2 - 24 hours.
Keep track of time so you don’t lose your precious prim creations.
3) You can carry prims you have created, but too many could affect performance.
One of the reason users buy land is to provide a permanent place for their prims.
4) If your primitive is owned by a group, the group may periodically flush all objects.
Which could delete your precious prims in the process..something to keep in mind.
Apparently, a large majority of users who visit Second Life don’t actually build things.
So out of the 40,000 users online, only a handful of users were at the sandboxes I visited.
A few more advanced aspects of building are worth mentioning: Building Step4: Advanced
