An Exploration of Trust

Trust is an integral component to all of our lives. We trust others. Others trust us. Decisions are informed on the basis of whether or not we believe trust will be maintained, thus allowing us to continue to rely on the other person. At times our trust in a person or concept shapes our identities. Our emotions are linked to this expectation as well. The following is an exploration of the relationship between trust and truth. Each of the five sections represents a scenario in which trust and truth interact as manifested in mathematical expressions. Click on the song titles to hear these representations.

Trust + Truth

This expression represents the presence of trust and truth. Trust is extended. In turn, truth is offered. Expectations have been met.

On the Road

I tell you my secrets
I trust you to keep them
There's never a moment
that I do not need you
My world revolves around your life

On the road, on the road
Traveling on the road
I follow you or you follow me
I know that we always will be
Together on the road

In my life story
You're the ghostwriter
All of those pages
Read like a poem
Beautiful neat and true

On the road, on the road
Traveling on the road
I follow you or you follow me
I know that we always will be
United on the road

And if it gets bumpy
Trust that we'll make it through

On the road, on the road
Traveling on the road
I follow you or you follow me
I know that we always will be
Together on the road

Trust - Truth

There is trust, yet there is not truth. Someone has upset the balance, breached the contract. The first piece reflects "blind trust" whereby trust is given unconditionally, even though there is an awareness that truth is not being conveyed. The second piece represents the unraveling of trust. This is the moment in which trust becomes impossible from a practical and emotional standpoint in light of the absence of truth.

After All This Time

You may not be the most faithful
Your thoughts aren't always about me
My friends may say your selfish, that your lookin' for an out
But know my love is strong enough to help us make it through

After all this time
I'm still in love with you
Just like I knew I always would
They can't change my mind
For what else can I do?
There's no one out there quite like you

I often wonder if I'll ever find another love
who would welcome me despite my faults
and we know I have many

Sometimes I doubt my self worth
Your love restores my self-esteem
I thank you for the way you opened up my heart
And now devotion is the one thing I can offer you

After all this time
I'm still in love with you
Just like I knew I always would
They can't change my mind
For what else can I do?
There's no one out there quite like you

Can't Get Back

You broke the rules that you designed
Yet I believed, was that my fault?
Does that mean I've been living a lie?
There is a cost you have to pay when you break someone's heart
You run the risk of losing all you had
But I lost more than you
I lost the future I planned
I can't get that back
I don't know how I can trust again
When I don't trust myself to choose wisely

I can't waste anymore time on you
You'll fuck me up
I don't know how I am going to get through
But I'll find out
Reality was yours to control
You thought that you could hide the ball
What did you think that you would gain from hurting me?
Answer me
You lied to me
Can't you see
I can't get time back
Trust you can't get back
I can't get time back
Trust you can't get back

-Trust + Truth

Now we hear the story from the other perspective. There is no trust, yet this person is trying to convey a message that he believes to be the truth in hopes of regaining the trust of the other person.

I Hate

I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate the way I've hurt you
I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate how this has changed you

There are words that have to get out
There is truth that must be told
Baby know I'm telling the truth

I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate how you don't trust me
I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate the way we left it

I could prove it to you
Would you listen to me?
If you hear me out I would be greatful
Life without you has no meaning

Believe, believe, believe, believe, believe me when I tell you
I've changed, I've changed, I've changed, I've changed, I've changed for the better

-Trust - Truth

There is neither trust nor truth. Trust was lost due to the absence of truth. The decision to remove trust from the expression was further substantiated by the other side once again removing truth. Apathy, anger, hurt, and nostalgia whirl in one's mind.

I'm Trying to Move on with My Life

No more petty fights
I could not care less
You should have know by now
Trust is all gone

Trapped under your spell
For too many years
You lied too many times
During our affair

On top of that you tried to pull the wool over my eyes again
Please realize

I'm trying to move on with my life
You're trying to move into my life
I closed the door now I am in control
There's nothing left that you could say or do to change that

Would you be surprised I found someone new?
I'm treated better now than I was by you

Time after time you proved that you were not worthy of my love
Please recognize

I'm trying to move on with my life
You're trying to move into my life
I closed the door now I am in control
There's nothing left that you could say or do to change that

If you think I've gone too far
Remember it was you who changed the game

There is one thing you must know
I would have gone through anything with you
If you maintained my trust
Love is built on trust
Worlds are turned on trust
Love is built on trust
