Deborah Scranton van Paassen has worked as a writer, reporter, and producer for networks such as ABC, ESPN, Fox, MTV, Outdoor Living Network, and USA Networks. In 2000, she returned to her family’s 150-acre farm in Goshen, NH. Although it seemed inevitable that she would have to give up her passion of journalism due to the lack of "news" in the small town, fascinating opportunities soon emerged.
In 2003, Deborah filmed "Stories from Silence: Witness to War," featuring interviews with the 20 living Goshen veterans of World War II. "I felt it was very important that everyone on the memorial be represented in one-way or another," Scranton van Paassen says. "My goal was for people to know the faces behind the names." See From Farmhands to Heroes for a NewEngland Film.com interview with Deborah about "Stories from Silence."
Most recently, in 2005, Deborah produced and directed the War Tapes, a documentary shot by U.S. soldiers from the front lines of Iraq. Rather than woking as an embedded journalist in the second Iraq war; instead, she went forward with her unique vision—directing a documentary film from the Internet. Ten self-selected soldiers from the New Hampshire National Guard were connected with Deborah, given consumer hand-held camcorders, and briefly trained to use them. The soldiers were then deployed for a one year tour in Iraq, and were in constant contact with Deborah over instant messenger and email.
