  • I am fascinated with reggae, its religious underpinnings, and the role it plays in Jamaican culture. I think that understanding the narrative of reggae can shed light on the Jah Cure case. Here is a link to my blog which includes entries on reggae and observations from my travel in Jamaica. I will be updating it frequently with new entries.
  • On homophobia in Jamaica: "Buggery" is still a crime in Jamaica today. When I met with the warden of the prison system (who, by the way, is a wonderful man, despite the attitude expressed here) I asked him about the problem of prison rape. His response was that they have a separate section for homosexuals - so rape was really not a problem. If you were caught having sex with other men, you were put in the homosexual section. That way, the homosexuals could do what they do...
    • Which is what, rape people? That's a bizarre response -- the only way it makes any sense is if you assume that homosexual-on-homosexual sex can never be rape?!
    • Exactly. It was very surreal to listen to his response. His attitude seemed to be that it was not rape at all.
