Mr. Carter is wrong to apply to himself John 1:5, "The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." That verse applies to Jesus and only to Jesus.

I think he means it as a reference to Jesus. He seems to be a very religious man. But, since he knows he is speaking to a diverse audience, he allows the words to carry meaning in a less specific way. Light shining in the darkness as truth triumphing over false and hateful assertions.
