What are the cases

From Copyright for Librarians

Jump to: navigation, search

Throughout the course, you will be exposed to a case study that will permeate your learning activities while exemplifying how the concepts taught in the Copyright for Librarians course apply to real life situations.

Each module starts with a real life situation, the story of a professor visiting her school’s library to prepare course material and discussing with a librarian. Together, the librarian and the professor will understand which use they can make from available resources and how they can distribute them. They will discuss policy advocacy and laws which could be more favourable to librarians, educators, the public, access to knowledge, and creativity. They will also elaborate concrete strategies to develop an Open Access policy in their university, and face an infringement action.

Law is flexible and legal definitions can have different interpretations. While concrete answers and legal advise can’t be provided for all copyright-related questions faced by librarians, the case methodology aims at exemplifying how legal concepts taught in the course can be interpreted. We hope this methodology will help you to frame the right questions, and that after studying the seven modules of the course, you will be able to identify issues and find answers in your local context and legislation.
