What will happen to the old, manila server and the blogs on it?
We encourage everyone to migrate (see ManilaMigration) to the new server, but we will continue to operate the old, manila server at least as long as there is significant new activity on it. Your existing blog on the server should continue to operate precisely as it has. At some point in the future, we may decrease the support for the manila server (for instance, by no longer waking up in the middle of the night to kick the server once a week) at our discretion but with ample warning to all users.
Important Update, Monday 3/26/07:
It has become absolutely imperative to shut the Manila server down permanently. If you would like anything off the Manila server or to migrate your blog from Manila to Wordpress, you need to do that before Monday, April 9, 2007. A special meeting on Thursday, March 29, at 6 pm at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, 23 Everett Street, Cambridge, is schedule to help people with the import process.
Where did the Manila blog go?
Manila blogs don't disappear. They magically are still accessible at http://blogs-manila.harvard.edu/{yourdirectory}.
UPDATE 3/26/07: After April 9, 2007, the Manila server - and any blogs remaining unmigrated to WordPress - will no longer be publicly accessible. Please do not point users to the blogs-manila address. In any case, logging into and navigating your manila blog via the blogs-manila address is difficult.
We highly recommend that you not use the blogs-manila address for anything other than simply checking the content of a post. If you need to do anything more significant with your old blog, we recommend that you ask us to roll back the migration for you, thereby removing your new blog and moving your manila blog back onto its original blogs.law url. In other words, if you find yourself needing to access your old manila blog, let us know and we'll help you.
How can I log into the moved Manila weblog?
First, read the note in the above 'Where did my manila blog go' section. Then proceed at your own risk.
The log in page at http://blogs-manila.law.harvard.edu/yourdirectory/member/login is hard coded to blogs.law.harvard.edu. Since your Manila blog just moved, if you try to log in there, you'll encounter a 404 error. If you edit the page to make <form action="http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/yourdirectory/member/login" method="POST"> point to <form action="http://blogs-manila.law.harvard.edu/yourdirectory/member/login" method="POST">, it should work. To change that code, you might need to save the page as HTML on a computer, edit it, open it in a browser, and log in via that page.
Will I lose any functionality on the Manila blog once it is archived?
First, read the note in the above 'Where did my manila blog go' section. Then proceed at your own risk.
Yes, many things will stop functioning once the Manila blog moves. It's a good idea to post any notices you might want after the move and make any other changes you might want before you go through the import process.
Part of the problem preventing things from working properly is that many of the URLs point to blogs.law instead of blogs-manila. Many links will work if you manually change the URLs to blogs-manila in the address bar. It's either very difficult to or not possible to change the links programmed into the weblog.
Another problem is that some of the submit forms won't work anymore because the referer is no longer blogs.law, but blogs-manila. This generates a referer error. Using a tool that will allow you to spoof referers, like Tamper Data, you might be able to change a referer manually to make a form work.
How do I migrate my blog on the old, manila server to the new server?
Just follow the instructions in the ManilaMigration howto.
