Overflow rooms will be made available in the first two time slots if the main rooms fill up. For the National Anthem session, the overflow room will be Pound 200. For What is Journalism? it will be Pound 204, and for Visions from Users it will be Pound 202. The overflow rooms will hear the webcast and may be able to participate in the discussion via IRC.
- Wireless Internet access is available in Pound Hall, through an access point named FAS Network. Navigate to any Web page and enter username blogger@law and password bl0gg3r to gain access for the day. There may be a limit to the number of people who can connect this way, so try to disconnect when you're not using your laptop.
- Lunch. We have almost two hours for lunch. If you're looking for a place to eat, when you walk from Mass Ave, if you go left you'll get to Harvard Square where there are lots of restaurants concentrated in a small area, and if you go right, you'll get to a pizza place one block away, a Starbuck's two blocks, a bar with good food (Cambridge Common) on the right two blocks away, and lots of sandwich places, Chinese and Mexican. It's conceivable you could walk as far as Porter Square and eat and get back in time for the afternoon sessions. Lots of restaurants there.
Reception. The evening reception will be held in the same space as the day's sessions. We will provide beverages and snacks. No alchohol. The wireless Internet access will remain on, so you can write your reports in the early evening if you like. Lots of places to do some relatively quiet work. Dinner is on your own.
- Groundrules. No commercials. You may not promote products, however products may be mentioned in the course of discussion. No lawyers. No meta-discussions. This is a user's conference, developer issues are off-topic. No speakers, no panels, no audience. Everyone is an expert and a journalist. Everything is on the record, for-attribution, unless otherwise stated and agreed to. The sessions are discussions. When in doubt, cut the other guy some slack. "It's even worse than it appears."
- Discussion leaders. Think of the discussion leader as a reporter who is creating a story with quotes from the people in the room. So, instead of having a panel with an audience we just have people. We feel this more accurately reflects what's going on. It's not uncommon for the audience at a conference to have more expertise than the people who are speaking. The discussion leader is also the editor, so if he or she feels that a point has been made they must move on to the next point quickly. No droning, no filibusters, no repeating an idea over and over.
- Webcast, IRC. Instructions for the webcast and IRC are on the BloggerCon site. Look for the link in the upper right margin of any page on the site.
