Or try Ghostview/Ghostscript. I've had better luck reading some PDF files with it (e.g., HP...errr..AgileLint) than Acrobat.

                Acrobat reader version *5* or a recent version of xpdf is
needed to read the files. They aren't really (irony!) encrypted. That
error message just means the version being used to read then is too old.
